The Calling of Mother Pathibhara: They say, unless you are truly called by Mother Pathibhara, you cannot worship her — not even if you reach the very gate of her temple. But I was blessed; I received her divine calling. Nestled in the far eastern hills of Nepal, in Taplejung district, lies one of the most revered spiritual destinations: the sacred shrine of Pathibhara Devi. Sitting at an altitude of 3,794 meters above sea level, the place gets its name from the hill shaped like a "Pathi," a traditional vessel used in Nepal to measure grains. Locals lovingly call it "Mukumlung." Pathibhara holds deep significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is believed to be one of the powerful Shaktipeeths — sacred sites dedicated to Devi Shakti, the divine feminine energy. Pilgrims not only from Nepal but also from neighboring countries travel here, seeking blessings and the fulfillment of their deepest wishes. According to the local pujari (the priest who conducts temple rituals), Pathibhara is not actually the goddess’s name. She is worshipped here as Panchakanya Kalika Devi. Mythology says that Goddess Parvati manifested five other goddesses from her own body at this very place, making it a site of immense spiritual energy. There’s another fascinating legend tied to the temple. Long ago, a shepherd lost hundreds of his sheep and goats on this hill. That night, the Devi appeared to him in a dream, instructing him to build a shrine and offer a sacrifice. The next day, he followed her instructions — and miraculously, all his lost animals returned. Since then, the tradition of "Bali Pratha" (animal offering) began here. It is said that if you come here and worship sincerely, your wishes are granted. Especially, many come here praying for children, journeying from far and wide with hope in their hearts. Beyond the religious significance, the journey itself is breathtaking. The path to Pathibhara is blessed with stunning views of mountains, vibrant rhododendron forests, rolling hills, and a serene environment that soothes the soul. To reach this sacred site, we traveled by jeep — about 694 kilometers from Kathmandu to Taplejung — and then took an off-road journey of around 18 kilometers to Sano Fedi, where the hike begins. The trail from Sano Fedi to Thulo Fedi is a relatively easy uphill walk. Upon reaching Thulo Fedi, devotees first offer prayers at Kanchi Pathibhara, seeking courage and blessings for the final ascent. From there, the real challenge begins — a steep climb up the stone stairs. For those unable to hike, porters are available, charging about Rs. 100 per kilo according to the traveler's weight. After 2 to 3 hours of determined walking, you finally reach the top — and stand before Mother Pathibhara herself. May Mother Pathibhara bless all who make this sacred journey!
