Replying to @Can this… is a question that keeps me up at night. one I don’t know the definitive answer to myself. in short, I think the answer is too scary to say out loud, so I will tell you my story instead… I want to start by saying I have huge respect for NHS workers. This is not a criticism of them. It’s a criticism of the broken system they’re forced to work within, a system that is so dangerously under-resourced and overstretched that it simply cannot function as it’s meant to. And when things are this stretched, people do fall through the cracks. Like many; I was a victim of this systematic failure. Over the course of just two months, I presented to A&E three separate times (despite my apphrehension to ‘kick up a fuss’ and go to hospital in the first place) with increasingly severe symptoms. What people don’t know is that I’d initially collapsed outside another hospital that I’d mistakenly walked to to find that they didn’t even have an emergency department onsite. The nurses there called an ambulance for me (that would have taken 90+ minutes to arrive anyway) but begged them to cancel it, trying not to “waste resources” and ordered an uber to a hospital 30 minutes away with an emergency department. I arrived at A&E on my own and collapsed at the triage desk again. The triage nurses firstly ignored me, and carried on chatting away. I came back around, and they looked over the counter to tell m me to “get myself together” as they needed my name and details. No sense of compassion or clinical urgency. There weren’t enough chairs, let alone beds, meaning I was treated (if you can call it that) while slumped in the last remaining chair in the waiting room, after waiting for 10 hours. The doctor told me they were too busy and I needed to see my GP instead. FYI; I had seen multiple doctors who dismissed my symptoms as anxiety and told me that I didn’t ‘look’ ill. A few weeks later, I had a moment of medical stability so I got on a flight to Australia to see my parents. Unfortunately, as the problem had not been solved, let alone identified, I inevitably fell ill again. Except this time I was critically ill. The contrast of presenting to emergency in Australia was indescribable. Within 10 minutes of walking into emergency, I was triaged and taken straight through to resus. It was busy, but they still listened. I was hooked up to monitors, stabilised for a few days, and then admitted to the general ward. I spent over a month in hospital receiving 24/7 care. Not just medical intervention but real, human support. And with reciprocal health care rights for UK citizens, I didn’t have to pay a penny for that care. That in itself is a privilege I don’t take for granted. The hospital I was transferred to, a public one, was so well-resourced it felt more like a hotel than a ward. And no, it wasn’t “nice” to be there - no hospital admission ever is - but the difference was, here, I felt safe. They didn’t just stabilise my body. They gave me the emotional support to get back toward living a normal life again with a clear discharge plan to outpatient care. There’s so much more to my story, and more I’ll share when I’m ready. I’ve only just been discharged after 1.5 months in hospital and am still receiving the daily outpatient care. I’m still processing everything. The trauma, the close calls, the weight of knowing that this outcome might not have happened had I stayed in the UK. That thought alone is something I carry with me every single day. It follows me into sleep. I didn’t know how to articulate it before… I still don’t fully, but I wanted to say something, as I know that sadly, I am not the only one who has or will experience this. Please remember that you are worthy of care. Do not let yourself or anyone else undermine your experience. If you feel something it wrong, get the help you need and don’t stop seeking the answer until you have it. I love each and every one of you, thank you for staying by my side through every chapter. 🤍
