8:57am my two little tornadoes beg me to let them have a make up party on my head. 8:59am I agree to the torture. 9:04am they get into a huge fight over “the kind” of make up they’re going to give me so they decide to split my face down the middle and each one of them can do whatever they want to “their side” of daddy’s face 👀 10:17am I’m in the shower realizing this s#%t takes forever to wash off. 11am zoom meeting, realizing I still have nail polish on 💅🏾🙋🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️ But in the end when it’s time to tuck ‘em in to bed, and kiss ‘em goodnight - you remember quick that they’re only little once and you’d do anything to make ‘em laugh and smile. A brotherly hug almost 10 years in the making 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼🤎🤍 @Jelly Roll Several years ago (roughly 2017) I was going through a very hard thing at the time, I was struggling. My mental wellness turned into my mental hellness. Many of you know the drill, you put on “the face”, show up to work, smile and get through it. Perhaps not the healthiest thing to do, but it’s what I was used to doing at the time. Then a song came on through my headphones one morning on a random shuffle playlist. “Only” from Jelly Roll. The lyrics rocked me. Hard core. The words moved me so much that I reached out to Jelly. I said you don’t know me and I don’t know you, but this song of yours is helping me through some stuff I’m dealing with. I just called to say thank you brother. Our bond was born. The gift I gave Jelly when we finally met, is insignificant to the world, but something I just knew would mean a lot to him and he’d appreciate. It’s an old, and cheap postcard of a little motel called the Alamo Plaza in south Nashville. When I was 15yrs I was forced (family was evicted) to leave Hawaii and make it to Nashville to live with my dad. That didn’t work out so I wound up living with a stranger in this little spot on Murfreesboro Road that has since been torn down and no longer there. Downtown Bruno was that stranger’s name and to this day, he’s one of my best and most special friends. Just like Jelly. A very special friend. Every once in a while we all get sliced up by life, but it’s amazing to see what kind of blessings and people that God and the universe will put in our lives to help us heal through our pain. And a big SURREAL shout out to our boy @Craig Morgan 🎶 who I was just listening to in my truck as I pulled up to meet Jelly. How’s THAT for the universe conspiring for us!! I’m super proud of him and how he carries himself humbly in the spotlight (which is insanely hard to do, especially as a 20yr old young man) and most proud how he represents our Polynesian culture. Sometimes dreams that don’t true are the best things to happen. Heartbreaking at the time, but you never know what’s in store down the road if you just keep working hard and moving on. How bout this proof how life can sometimes come full circle? ⭕️💫❤️ I’ve had the privilege of granting hundreds and hundreds of kid’s wishes from @Make-A-Wish and every single one has changed my life every single time. And looking back to when I was a kid - my dad, Rocky Johnson was actually one of Make-A-Wish’s VERY FIRST WISH GRANTERS back in the 80’s. My dad was a very tough, no BS guy who wasn’t big on emotions. But when I saw him take this little boy, Bobby out of his wheelchair and hold him in his arms - I’d never seen my dad so loving, warm, caring and ATTENTIVE in my life. As a kid I remember thinking how surprised I was seeing my dad that warm and how cool it was to me, that my dad was a hero. But now as a man, I look back and think that the REAL HERO is that little boy Bobby, and my dad was LUCKY to have the honor of making little Bobby’s wish come true. I don’t have a ton of memories of my dad being so loving like this so it means a lot to me to relive this and this also reminds me of the power of MAKE A WISH. Thanks everyone for supporting Make-A-Wish, as I will always hold the foundation and ALL THE KIDS very close to my heart — I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes / It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
